The monument in Flirey, France dedicated to the soldiers.

On one side of the monument, it lists the American divisions that were in battle. In all, 17 divisions participated, usually at least 25,000 men per division.

East from the monuments, along this road is where the 89th Division was located on the eve of the Battle of St. Mihiel, September 1918.

Just outside of Flirey, the 89th Division advanced north across these fields when the battle began. Their objective the first day was the forrest in the distance, Bois de Mort-Mare. Ansoncourt Farm is located to the right.

A typical WWI trench on the Western Front. The guide gives you a sense of how deep the trenches were.

As part of the trench system, tunnels were often built connected to the trench.

A trench that is becoming overgrown.

This building was used by both French and German troops during World War One. The original site was also used by troops during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870. It's now taken care of by a local community group.

The grave of John Hunter Wickersham (89th Division), Medal of Honor recipient. The day before he died, Wickersham wrote a poem to his mother, titled "The Raindrops on Your Old Tin Hat".

The cemetery contained some graves of Russian soldiers, the triangle-shaped markers.
89th Division Football Team

The 89th Division won the AEF Football Championship after the war in 1919 in Paris.
